This is what DJ Driis did in Dubai. An exclusive Idris Elba interview & live DJ set

May 3, 2018

The world is flooded with actors who have turned to music, but it is not often that you see someone start off as a DJ and then find their fame on the big screen. That is exactly the case with British DJ and actor, Idris Elba. Ahead of his performance at the Gotha Club Dubai, Dance FM had the absolute pleasure of interviewing the multi-talented superstar and watching him in action as he played an exclusive live set for Dance FM.

When a few people hear that the TV Detective John Luther is a DJ, it comes as a surprise but, it was evident from the beginning that Idris is at home on the decks, be it in the smallest of spaces or massive arenas. He has yearly residencies at the biggest clubs in Ibiza, namely the party epicentre Pacha & Pikes.

Big Driis or just DJ Idris, fell in love with music at an early age. He started off rapping with his best friends in a group called ‘Ultra Demus.’ He caught the acting bug around the same time too, he joked that he is a better actor than a DJ. In recent years, he said he has really started to focus on his music and is grateful that his fans have been understanding and supportive through time.

“I love to DJ. It’s my heart.” – Idris Elba, on why he makes music.

He played the role of Tango in the 2007 film ‘American Gangster’ but he also had a hand in the soundtrack. Jay Z headed the project and it was something Idris really wanted to be a part of. He earned his keep on the music board by writing a poem based on the gangsters in the film. Jay Z’s reply was, “I don’t like it. I love it!” And that is how he got to be on the album.

When James asked him what his favourite music project or collaboration was, he was quick to say his album ‘Mi Mandela’ from 2014. It was something he worked on in South Africa after his father passed away and as an only child, it hit him quite hard. The album was therapy and the collaborations with the South African artists produced something heartfelt and genuine.
