A show dedicated to bringing you only the best in Drum ‘n’ Bass and Dubstep.
DJ & Producer across a wide range of electronic music – predominantly DnB, Dubstep, Psytrance, and everything in between!
I love my DJing with a passion, have a massive vinyl collection, but also really got into using Traktor, albeit with proper vinyl control and the X1 for effects.
I don’t take my production too seriously, but enjoy boshing out the odd tune when I’ve got the time!
My DAW of choice is Reason, and sometimes go crazy and hook up the MIDI keyboard…
If you like the sounds be sure to follow my boys DJ DNO and DJ ICM – the original Cutmasterz Cru!
A local of the Emirates DNB tribe, and regular at Bassworx.
Dubai based, UK MaSScon, sound’s collective sways from minimalistic steppers, to a cross fusion of intent jungle/drum&bass and anything else that suits his taste.
Since the early 80’s when Electro and Hip Hop first emerged breakbeats have been in the blood of Ben McDonald (aka MACH4). From the sounds of Bambaata to Man Parrish and from Kraftwerk to Captain Rock he was hooked.
That early B Boy culture and street music still remain strong in MACH4’s veins to this day and just flicking through his ipod is like a trip down memory lane through Drum n Bass, Jungle, Breakbeat, Rave, Hip Hop and beyond….
MACH4’s fascination in DJ’ing hit when at university in the early 90’s. Helping to throw house parties in disused houses in High Wycombe proved a good inroad into the world of the “ones and two’s”. Initially he would get his DJ friends to come along and spin and gradually plucked up the courage to give it a go himself. That was it, he was bitten. The next few years were spent earning money to buy vinyl (which he still prefers to play to this day) and hone his mixing skills. During this time, he also attended many of the legendary raves and clubs in London like Labyrinth, Biology, The Rocket, Orange The Lazerdrome and AWOL. It was really at the latter where the like of Randall, Mickey Finn and Dr S Gachet blew him away with the early Jungle sounds. Not one for the monotony of the 4/4 house sounds MACH4 went down the path of Amen beats, Ragga basslines, dark samples and into the Jungle.
A move to Malaysia for work in 1997 saw him take to the decks at various house and club parties. Spinning for free, just in order to get behind the decks and meet other DJ’s, he hooked up with ‘Fresh’ (a Malay DJ) and they formed a strong DJ partnership that rocked many parties during 97 and early 98.
Work again saw MACH4 on his travels and this time to the UAE (where he still resides today). It was kind of back to square one in terms of promoting himself and a stroke of fortune saw him stumble on the early Fire Island parties at the Sun Rock hotel where he got a slot in the back room spinning what had now become Drum n Bass mixed with some early Hip Hop. From these early slots he secured a guest mix on the Crazy Spin shows on Radio 1 where he met DJ Point. In 2001 the two partnered up and threw a few parties under the name LIQUID. After a couple MACH4 decided to throw some international names into the mix and he brought over Jumping Jack Frost and J Majik – both parties exposed Dubai to some serious bass and drum n bass had officially arrived in the UAE.
In June 2003 GlobalFunk was born and was set up as a platform for DJ’s in the UAE who were playing Hip Hop, Breaks, D&B and the less commercial side of house to have a stage to show their talent. This night still runs to this date and is the longest running Dance Music Brand in the UAE. Successful residencies at Boudoir, Tangerine, Trilogy and Oxygen followed and by early 2004 it was time to unleash some more international DJ’s from the drum n bass scene. Sellout events with Andy C, DJ Zinc, DJ Hype and Goldie soon followed.
In 2005 iBO was born. As a co-founder of the club, with the 9714 crew, iBO grew to be one of the most groundbreaking and forward-thinking venues the Middle East has ever seen (and is still yet to be seen again). SELLOUT monthly nights with names such as London Elektricity, LTJ Bukem, Andy C, Fabio and Roni Size saw his profile rise as not just a DJ but a key promoter of underground music in the region. Attendees to these nights would fly in from around the GCC. Real testament to MACH4 and the GlobalFunk brand
Between 2008 – 2010 MACH4 took his night to Alpha. With is incredible Funktion One sound system and no-nonsense music policy it was the perfect fit and top Breaks and DnB name graced the decks. Krafty Kuts, Kenny Ken, Doc Scott, DJ Storm, Stanton Warriors and many more passed through leaving their mark on Dubai and its now growing group of BASS music enthusiasts
After the closure of Alpha in 2010 GlobalFunk took up spot residencies at venues such as Trilogy, Catwalk and most recently The Music Room where nights promoting local talent and the BIG international names continued to fill the dancefloors.
His international experience has seen him play at such venues as THE END (for Andy C’s Ram Records) THE SCALA & PLAN B (Essence Of Chi) and 2011 saw him play at LEGENDARY London nightclub FABRIC for DJ Hype’s PLAYAZ night – where he has since returned to annually to spin on the hallowed decks for the clubs longest running and most successful night.
As 2012 draws to a close MACH4 can be seen playing at his own nights as well as guest slots at new BASS driven nights such AudiOasis. MACH4 is still turning out the GlobalFunk parties on a monthly basis – in partnership with Charl Chaka and the INFUSION crew – and these are going from strength to strength… Watch this space.
